James E. Smith
Some understand the baptism of the Holy Spirit to refer to a phenomenon attested to a limited
number of occasions in the first century prior to A.D. 70. Others believe that the baptism of the
Holy Spirit is still available and needed today. Indeed, claims are made regularly that people are
baptized in the Holy Spirit in church services of certain groups of believers. Still others believe
that the baptism of the Holy Spirit takes place every time a Great Commission baptism takes
place. Which view is correct?
